A paper printed by the Centre for Muslim Christian Studies Academic Director, Dr Martin Whittingham, to a largely Muslim audience at a conference held in Ankara, Turkey, in May 2014 entitled Rethinking the Qur’an: Qur’anic concepts.
The issue of Qur’anic references to the Injīl (Gospel) is a common theme in Christian-Muslim conversation. Sometimes it appears to suggest common ground and Christians are hopeful that Qur’anic approval of the Injīl will encourage Muslims to take the New Testament seriously. On other occasions it arises as a point of polemical contention with accusations by Muslims of corruption (taḥrīf) of the Christian text. Whichever tendency prevails, it is clear that a proper understanding of Qur’anic references to the Injīl is vital for Muslim-Christian dialogue today and Dr Whittingham is currently working on a book entitled A History of Muslim Views of the Bible.
